Process AI

WHAT IS IT?

Process AI is the application of artificial intelligence for the optimization of business processes.

At INFORM – in most cases it means the extension of INFORM’s established Decision Intelligence solutions with learning, contextualizing, interactive and, adaptive AI functionalities. However, the term is not a creation of INFORM alone, but is about to become a term for AI solutions for the improvement and optimization of business processes, such as those used by SAP signavio, celonis, PEGA Systems or process.st. Narrower definitions for more limited applications can also be found on the Internet. However, even in these groups, there is still no consensus on the semantics of the term, so we have taken the liberty of assigning the term a semantics suitable for INFORM.

While image recognition (e.g., in material testing) and forecasting (e.g., of sales volumes) have been among the typical areas of application for artificial intelligence in recent years and generative AI is being intensively tested in marketing and controlling, for example, artificial intelligence technologies are opening up opportunities in the management of operational and tactical business processes that go far beyond this.

For example, digital (AI) models of operational processes can be created that can provide a quick digital reflection as well as forecasts and assistance that go beyond previous AI use cases. AI expands an organization‘s capability to harness vast data volumes for insights, provides additional context for business decisions, and assesses the broader impacts of these decisions throughout the company. Process mining helps to better understand certain types of business processes. We refer to this optimization of business processes using AI as “Process AI.” This explicitly refers to applications that interact with the physical, real world, for example, in supply chain management, transportation, ground handling at airports, logistics at terminals and distribution centers, workforce management and, production scheduling.

There is also the idea that AI could learn, digitally represent, examine and improve the conditions and relationships of process landscapes. Such “large process models” are currently being researched by INFORM and others.
